NAWALPARASI: Maharajathan, located in Kawasoti, Nawalparasi (east of Bardaghat-Sustapur), is gradually becoming a popular destination for religious tourism.
The temple, situated in Kawasoti-1, Hattikhor, is believed to have been established during the Sen period.
Local elders say the temple was founded by King Manimukunda Sen of Palpa. Legend has it that he built this Shaktipeeth to protect the borders of his kingdom and personally worshipped it, said Chet Bahadur Thapa, chairman of the Maharaja Temple Religious Service Committee.
Situated about seven kilometers north of Kawasoti Bazaar, the temple attracts devotees from Nawalpur and other districts daily.
It is gaining recognition as a key religious tourism site, with many visiting the temple to make vows, believing that their wishes will be fulfilled, said Thapa. “The community worships here in all circumstances, whether favorable or unfavorable,” he added.
Historical records from elders suggest that during epidemics, including malaria, devout worshippers offered sacrifices of chickens, ducks, pigeons, sheep, goats, and buffaloes at the temple. They would stay four to five days performing religious rituals to protect the local population from disease, said Thapa.
The indigenous Tharu community has been worshipping Maharajathan for centuries. According to Thapa, the deity is believed to bless childless couples with children, and some families even name their children Maharaja or Maharaji in honor of the deity.
The temple’s scenic surroundings, including its green environment, cool air, and picturesque views, have also contributed to the rising number of visitors. Many devotees come to release pigeons along with the Panchabali ritual, for which the temple management has set specific fees.
Maharaja Than sees especially large crowds during festivals such as Bada Dashain and Ram Nawami (Chaite Dashain). A detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared to construct additional structures and improve the temple premises, Thapa said. He stressed the need for state-level initiatives to preserve and develop this historical site further.
Om Bahadur Thapa, acting ward chairman of Kawasoti Municipality-1, said that ward-level funds have been allocated for the construction and management of temple facilities.
He added that support from state and federal levels is essential to further develop Maharaja Than as a prominent religious tourism destination, not only for Nawalpur but for the entire country.
