Three arrested for burglary at Balen Shah’s residence
Police have arrested three individuals involved in a burglary at the Mandikatar residence of senior Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen. According to SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of the District Police Range Kathmandu, the suspects were arrested on different dates, and some of the stolen items have been recovered from their possession. Police said laptops, adapters and a video recorder were seized from the arrested individuals. Investigations have revealed that the main planner of the burglary was among the prisoners who escaped from Nakhu Prison in Lalitpur during the Gen-Z movement on September 9.
HoR election: EC to dispatch nine types of materials
The Election Commission (EC) said to will dispatch nine types of election materials from the central office for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5. In addition, the Commission has prepared to manage 37 types of election materials at the district level, Assistant Spokesperson Prakash Neupane said. The materials to be sent from the Commission to each constituency include security check-posts, non-fading ink markers, stamp pads and pad ink, two types of swastika stamps, and ballot box stickers.
NC urges respectful campaigns, discourages insults against rivals
The Nepali Congress (NC) has unveiled its official guidelines for the upcoming (March 5) general election, emphasizing respectful competition and discouraging personal attacks on rival candidates. During a virtual meeting of the Central Work Execution Committee held today, the party approved the ‘Nepali Congress Election Mobilization Guidelines 2082’. NC Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma, coordinator of the Central Election Mobilization Committee, led the formulation of the guidelines.
Prime Minister Karki wishes Nepali cricket team victory
Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has extended her best wishes to the Nepali cricket team ahead of their historic T20 World Cup match against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium today. Expressing her confidence in the team, the Prime Minister said that under captain Rohit Paudel’s leadership, the players are expected to demonstrate Nepal’s spirit, unity, and determination on the field. Nepal, participating in the ICC T20 World Cup, enjoys support from fans worldwide. The team’s past achievements and remarkable performances have made today’s match particularly special.
NEPSE Index drops by double digits
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index declined by double digits on Sunday, shedding 10.25 points to settle at 2,698.44. According to NEPSE, a total of 26,236,204 shares of 330 companies were traded through 111,978 transactions during the session, generating a total turnover of Rs 11.65 billion. Among the sectoral indices, the investment group gained 0.08 percent, while the others group rose by 0.46 percent. All other sub-indices ended the day in negative territory.
Artists gather to pay emotional tribute to Sunil Thapa
The body of veteran actor Sunil Thapa, who passed away on Saturday, was brought to the Film Development Board, where artists and fans paid homage. Thapa, who was rushed to Norvic Hospital in Thapathali after experiencing sudden health complications, died on Saturday morning. According to Mohan Niraula, President of the Artists’ Association of Nepal, Thapa passed away due to a heart attack. Widely recognized for his powerful portrayals of villainous roles in Nepali cinema, he was popularly known as ‘Raate Kainla’.
Kathmandu’s air quality reaches ‘unhealthy’ levels
Air pollution in Kathmandu Valley has surged to unhealthy levels today, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 175 by midday. The city now ranks as the seventh most polluted globally, raising alarms over public health and the urgent need for environmental measures. Cairo in Egypt recorded the highest pollution globally, with an AQI of 273. Gyanraj Subedi, Director General of the Department of Environment, said that the rise in pollution is due to dry weather, lack of wind, industrial operations, and rapid construction and development. He added that smoke and dust from industrial activities, cross-border pollution, and emissions from neighboring India have also contributed.
Two more industries begin operations in Hetauda Industrial Area
The number of industries operating in Hetauda Industrial Area, Makawanpur, has been steadily increasing. Recently, two more industries have commenced operations within the industrial zone. Ramesh Raj Nepal, Information Officer at the Industrial Area Management Office, stated that Precious Oist Refinery Pvt. Ltd. began trial production in the first week of January. The industry processes old electronic goods to extract and produce new metals, marking what is likely the first operation of its kind in Nepal.
HoR polls: Authorities urge respect for voter confidentiality
The District Election Office, Kathmandu, has objected to the misuse of social media and some online media outlets to violate voter confidentiality regarding whom to vote for. The office has drawn attention to the need for strict compliance with the election code of conduct and urged all concerned not to breach voter secrecy. Citing Section 4 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, the Election Office stated that such actions constitute violations of the code and warned that legal action will be taken under prevailing laws if the practices continue.
HPV vaccination campaign for girls begins nationwide
The government has launched a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign for girls studying in Grade 6, starting today. According to the Child Health and Vaccination Branch of the Department of Health Services, the campaign targets girls currently enrolled in Grade 6 as well as out-of-school girls aged 10 years and above across the country. The vaccination drive will continue until February 27.
Girl dies, woman injured in elephant attack in Kanchanpur
A six-year-old girl has died and a woman injured after a wild elephant attacked a house in Laljhandi Rural Municipality-6, Kanchanpur. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Hem Bahadur Shahi, spokesperson for the District Police Office, the elephant attacked the home of Kishan Singh Saud in Chandev last night. Six-year-old Rojina Saud, Saud’s daughter, succumbed to her injuries during treatment at Navajivan Hospital in Dhangadhi.
NEA urges employees to uphold institutional dignity on social media
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has warned its employees to uphold the dignity of the institution while using social media. The Authority has reminded all employees that it is their responsibility to comply with the provisions related to conduct as outlined in the NEA Employee Service Terms and Conditions and Regulations. The NEA expressed concern over the recent rise in unverified and misleading posts and reactions on social media and in some media outlets that negatively affect the reputation of the institution and society, including the circulation of official letters.
