Special convention faction accuses NC establishment of provoking confrontation

KATHMANDU: The faction advocating for a special general convention of the Nepali Congress has accused the party establishment of attempting to create a confrontation by organizing a youth gathering at the party’s central office on the very day the special convention was scheduled.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, leaders from the special convention faction alleged that while they had announced the special general convention, the party’s central office, in the name of the central committee and under the pretext of a youth gathering, scheduled another event at the same venue, potentially provoking a clash among party cadres.

They said they believe the party leadership would support the special convention and therefore urged the central office not to organize a youth gathering on that day.

Addressing the press, special convention supporter and Congress leader Ajay Babu Siwakoti said that if the youth gathering was called out of fear that the special convention faction might seize the party office, such a childish assumption was unfounded. He stressed that they had rejected the directive claiming the special convention had lost its relevance.

He added that preparations for the special convention, scheduled for Poush 27 and 28, were moving ahead rapidly, noting that General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma had appealed for participation.

According to him, preparations are also underway at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu to host the special convention, including placing party flags and constructing the convention venue.
