Death toll in Sankhu bus accident rises to five



KATHMANDU: The death toll from a bus accident on the Jharasinghpauwa–Sankhu road section in Kathmandu has risen to five, while 33 injured passengers are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

The accident occurred on Wednesday evening when a bus bearing registration number Ba 4 Kha 8788 met with an accident. Three women and two men have been confirmed dead.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Bhattarai, Information Officer at the District Police Range, Kathmandu, Arjun Lamichhane, an estimated 55–60-year-old resident of Gokarneshwar Municipality–5, Jorpati, died during treatment at around 12:30 am last night, taking the total number of fatalities to five.

Earlier, the deceased were identified as 49-year-old Kamana Sharma of Kohalpur Municipality–5, Banke, who was currently residing in Budhanilkantha; 51-year-old Indira Limbu of Pathibhara–5, Taplejung, presently living in Budhanilkantha Municipality–7; 55-year-old Shanti Gupta of Siraha, currently residing in Pepsi-Cola, Kathmandu; and 65-year-old Devendra Limbu of Panchthar, who had been living in Gothatar.

Police said the bus was returning from a picnic organized by Nature House and Herb International Company when the accident occurred.

Those injured in the incident are receiving treatment at different hospitals in Kathmandu. Further details regarding the cause of the accident are yet to be disclosed by the authorities.
