Relief materials provided to flood-affected families in Bhotekoshi

KATHMANDU: Relief materials have been provided to flood-affected families living in vulnerable areas of Dandagaun in Uttargaya Rural Municipality-2 of Rasuwa district.

Sixty households affected by the Bhotekoshi flood received relief materials through the Integrated Humanitarian and Early Recovery Programme, with support from Start Fund Nepal, said Lubh Raj Neupane, executive director of Rural-Oriented Youth Movement (ROYM) Nepal.

He said the relief materials were distributed to provide immediate assistance to flood-affected single women and families living in high-risk areas.

The first phase of the relief distribution included winter essentials, as well as drinking water and sanitation materials, Neupane said.

Similarly, relief materials will be distributed in wards 1 and 5 of the same rural municipality next week.

Community kitchens have been operating at three locations in Rasuwa and Nuwakot for the past month with financial support from UN Women, with ROYM Nepal facilitating their operation.

The community kitchens have been providing breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner daily to flood-affected and displaced families, said Goma Bista, administrative and financial assistant at ROYM Nepal.

Bista said employment opportunities have also been provided to disaster-affected families at the community kitchens in coordination with the respective ward offices.

ROYM Nepal plans to provide financial assistance to at least 300 households to help flood-affected families restore their livelihoods.

According to Neupane, preparations are also underway to distribute blankets, quilts, thermal clothing, thermoses and hot-water bags to 1,000 households ahead of the winter season.

“Financial support will also be provided to affected families to help them earn a living,” he said.

The organization said the relief, employment and livelihood assistance is expected to provide disaster-affected families with immediate income opportunities during difficult circumstances and help ease their daily lives.

Anup Khanal, management coordinator of ROYM Nepal, said the organization is also repairing water supply pipelines damaged by floods in Bidur Municipality of Nuwakot and Uttargaya Rural Municipality of Rasuwa.

Tuku Subedi, ward chairperson of Uttargaya Rural Municipality-2, said the relief and assistance provided during the disaster had significantly helped affected communities in their daily lives. She urged the continuation of support and facilitation based on the needs and circumstances of the affected communities.

The RAIN (Resilience, Adaptation, and Inclusion in Nepal) programme is being implemented with support from Start Fund Nepal through the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The programme is being implemented under the leadership of ASAMAN Nepal in collaboration with ROYM Nepal, LACCOS and Welthungerhilfe (WHH), with guidance from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The organizations are implementing programmes focused on drinking water and sanitation, health, education, child protection, psychosocial support, nutrition and livelihood restoration in flood-affected areas.
