KATHMANDU: Families of people missing at the Trishuli-3B Hydropower Project site have staged a protest in Kathmandu, demanding that rescue operations at the project be expedited and made more effective.
Relatives of the missing gathered at Maitighar in Kathmandu on Monday, calling for immediate progress in search and rescue operations at the Upper Trishuli-3B Hydropower Project.
One woman participating in the protest accused the government of failing to accept foreign assistance during the initial days of the flood.
“The government did not accept foreign assistance on the first day of the flood. If it had, our people might have been found,” she said. “The government keeps saying rescue operations are underway, but there are no results. My brother and many others are still missing.”
She acknowledged that the terrain around Trishuli-3B was challenging but said other affected areas were also difficult to access.
“The government sends people carrying sickles and spades. Are they being sent there to dig a field?” she questioned.
Another woman at the protest said the home minister should focus on doing the work rather than personally rushing to the sites.
“Home Minister, please do your job. We are ready to carry the oxygen cylinders ourselves,” she said.
She accused the government of acting like a “superhero” despite foreign countries offering assistance.
“You cannot run a country by sitting in such a high position and just putting on a show,” she said. “If you cannot do anything, raise your hands and we will go and do it ourselves.”
