KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said the party will respect the Supreme Court’s recent order concerning the dispute over the party’s official legitimacy, expressing confidence that the decision of the party’s special general convention will ultimately be upheld.
Addressing the inaugural session of the second national convention of the Nepal Democratic Indigenous Nationalities Federation in Kathmandu on Friday, Thapa said the court’s order had naturally raised some questions, but the party would fully respect the judicial process.
“Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued an order regarding the dispute over the Nepali Congress’ legitimacy. Naturally, it has raised some questions. Our clear position is that we respect the court’s decision,” he said.
Thapa said the special general convention was held in accordance with the party statute with the participation of a majority of the sovereign general convention representatives, making its decisions legally valid.
He added that the Election Commission Nepal had already recognized the convention’s legitimacy and that the Supreme Court had also acknowledged it. If the court now requires further review or verification, the party would accept that process, he said.
“The Election Commission has already granted legal recognition to the special general convention, and the Supreme Court has also accepted it. If further verification is required, we will respect that as well,” Thapa said.
Thapa said he remained mindful of his responsibilities as party president and would continue efforts to keep the Nepali Congress united.
He added that the party was also working to bring leaders and members who did not participate in the special general convention into the fold ahead of the party’s 15th General Convention.
