KATHMANDU: Rainfall has disrupted major highways and road networks in several districts across the country, with landslides, road erosion, and flood risks affecting traffic movement.
Nepal Police, releasing the road status update today morning, stated that more than a dozen road sections have been affected by landslides, road washouts, and possible flooding.
According to the police, all types of vehicles have been barred from operating on the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway connecting Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am due to the risk of possible flooding. Vehicle movement has been allowed only from 4:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Similarly, traffic has been prohibited for all types of vehicles on the Kanti Lokpath from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am during the monsoon period.
Traffic has come to a complete halt after rainfall turned the road muddy at Rajduwali of Ilam Municipality-9 along the Mechi Highway. An alternative route has been brought into operation in the area.
In Sindhupalchowk, landslides and road collapses at Jirokilo, Kodari, and Liping under Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality have completely blocked several sections of the Araniko Highway.
Traffic has also been disrupted on the Lamosanghu–Ramechhap road after the Tamakoshi River eroded the road at Kirnetar of Tamakoshi Rural Municipality-5 in Dolakha. Police said an alternative route has been arranged through the premises of the Khimti Rural Electricity Cooperative Society.
Similarly, the Pasang Lhamu Highway in Rasuwa, the Nagma–Gamgadhi road in Mugu, the Kaligandaki Corridor at Belbagar in Jaimini Municipality-8 of Baglung, the Bheri Corridor at Rijegaad Khola in Rukum West, and the Beni–Jomsom road at Kaiku Khola in Thasang Rural Municipality-4 of Mustang have been completely blocked by landslides.
In Myagdi, traffic has been disrupted at two locations along the Beni–Jomsom road after sections of the road were washed away in Baiseri of Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2 and Bhirkate of Annapurna Rural Municipality-7.
Police also reported that traffic has been affected by a dry landslide along the Madan Bhandari road section at Lekh of Rurukshetra Rural Municipality-4 in Gulmi.
As the risk of landslides, floods, and road erosion remains high during the rainy season, police have urged the public to obtain updated road-condition information from the concerned authorities before travelling.
