Weather Department warns of heavy rainfall risk in four provinces amid active monsoon

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said monsoon activities remain active across most hilly areas of Nepal, while parts of Madhesh and Lumbini provinces have received less rainfall than expected.

Senior meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal said rainfall in the Terai areas of Madhes and Lumbini provinces has not matched the forecast. However, moderate rainfall is currently occurring in several hilly regions of the country.

“Monsoon winds are currently affecting the entire country. The monsoon low-pressure line is located south of its average position in the eastern region and around its average position in the western region,” Aryal said.

He added that although rainfall has been lower than expected in some areas, most hilly regions are experiencing moderate rainfall, with current precipitation mainly concentrated in the hills.

According to Aryal, moderate rainfall is occurring in parts of northern Lumbini Province and some areas of Sudurpaschim Province. He said rainfall activities are expected to gradually expand in the coming days as the monsoon system remains active.

The department has warned of possible thunderstorms, lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly in hilly areas, urging people to remain alert.

Heavy rainfall likely in four provinces

The department has forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces today.

Due to the influence of the monsoon system, rainfall is expected across most parts of the country.

According to the three-day weather forecast, some areas of the hilly and Himalayan regions are likely to receive moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is also expected in some parts of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in many areas of the Terai regions of Madhes, Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

Risk of floods, landslides and strong winds

The department has urged residents living near rivers and streams, landslide-prone areas and locations vulnerable to urban flooding to take precautions due to the possibility of heavy rainfall in hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

It has also warned that strong winds may affect parts of Madhes and Lumbini provinces, potentially damaging weak structures, agricultural crops, electricity and communication services.

The department said moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely in many Himalayan areas and some hilly and Terai regions tonight.

Heavy rainfall is also possible in many parts of Koshi Province, most areas of Madhes Province, and some parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

The department has advised the public to follow weather updates and remain cautious of sudden rises in river levels, landslides and urban flooding as monsoon activities are expected to continue in the coming days.
