Sugarcane farmers receive nearly Rs 1.8 billion in pending payments

MAHOTTARI: Sugarcane farmers in Mahottari have received nearly Rs 1.8 billion in long-pending payments for crops supplied to two sugar mills in the district.

According to the District Administration Office, farmers were paid more than Rs 1.76 billion for sugarcane delivered to Everest Sugar and Chemical Industries in Gaushala Municipality-1 and Siddhibinayak Sugar and Chemical Industries in Gaushala Municipality-12.

Farmers supplied around 2.8 million quintals of sugarcane to the two mills during the current fiscal year 2082/83. The payments have been calculated and cleared accordingly, Chief Administrative Officer Kameshwor Yadav said.

However, the government subsidy for sugarcane farmers has yet to be released. The District Payment Committee has written to the Office of the Financial Comptroller, requesting the release of the pending subsidy amounting to Rs 207 million.

The payment committee, chaired by the Chief District Officer, expressed confidence that all outstanding payments for sugarcane supplied to the mills would be settled within the current fiscal year.
