Two Indian trekkers rescued safely after being stranded in snowfall near Thorong La

KATHMANDU: Two Indian trekkers stranded in heavy snowfall while crossing the Thorong La Pass from Manang to Mustang were safely rescued on Wednesday evening by a joint team of the Nepali Army and police.

According to the Nepali Army, the trekkers were identified as 29-year-old Phanik Tony and 30-year-old Mitra Bindu, both residents of Kerala, India.

Snowfall occurred around midday in the Muktinath and Thorong La Pass area on Wednesday. Due to poor visibility and snow-covered trails, the trekkers became stranded at a place called Chisapani after losing their way on the route.

Earlier, information about the incident was communicated to the Mustang District Police Office by trekker Mitra Bindu after the duo was unable to locate the trail while traveling along the Annapurna Circuit from Manang through Thorong La Pass toward Mustang.

Lieutenant Colonel Gaurav Dhwaj Khand of the Indrabox Battalion said the joint rescue team located the trekkers at around 8 pm near Drum Camp in the lower section of Thorong La Pass amid continuing snowfall and brought them to safety.
