KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Gokul Prasad Baskota has suggested abolishing the provincial structure and District Coordination Committees (DCCs), arguing that only the federal and local levels should remain in place.
At a time when the government is preparing groundwork for constitutional amendment, Baskota expressed his views through a Facebook post on Thursday, stating that the current federal structure should be revised.
“Earlier, the RSP used to call for the abolition of federalism. Now, will there be constitutional amendment or not? If amendment is to be made, there should only be the center and local governments,” he wrote.
Baskota also proposed restructuring the National Assembly into a 105-member body with 50 percent representation each for women and men under a fully inclusive system. He further suggested that the Vice President should serve as the chairperson of the National Assembly.
Similarly, he called for the removal of proportional representation seats in the House of Representatives, while making it mandatory to ensure 40–60 percent representation of women and men through the direct electoral system.
He also reiterated that District Coordination Committees were unnecessary under the revised structure.
