Most UML office bearers face defeat in House election



KATHMANDU: Many senior leaders of the CPN-UML party are facing defeat in the ongoing House of Representatives election in Nepal, according to the latest vote counts.

Party chair KP Sharma Oli is trailing far behind Balen Shah of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Jhapa-5. Oli has secured 11,427 votes, while Shah has received 42,543 votes so far.

In Rupandehi-2, UML vice-chair Bishnu Prasad Paudel suffered a heavy defeat to RSP candidate Sulabh Kharel by more than 43,000 votes.

UML general secretary Shankar Pokharel has also conceded defeat and congratulated RSP’s Bipin Acharya in Dang-2.

Another vice-chair, Prithvi Subba Gurung, is also trailing in Lamjung, where RSP’s Dharmaraj KC has taken a strong lead.

Similarly, UML vice-chair Gokarna Bista has lost in Gulmi-2 to RSP candidate Govinda Panthi.

Among other leaders, deputy general secretaries Lekharaj Bhatta and Raghubir Mahaseth are also trailing significantly in their constituencies, while secretary Sherdhan Rai is behind Dhruvaraj Rai in Bhojpur.

UML secretary Mahesh Basnet has also lost in Bhaktapur-2 to RSP candidate Rajiv Khatri, while another secretary Rajan Bhattarai was defeated by Pukar Bam in Kathmandu-4.

Meanwhile, UML secretary Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal has already been defeated by Santosh Subba of the Nepali Congress in Tehrathum.
