Nepal Police have warned that action will be taken against those misusing social media.
RPP demands immediate release of Durga Prasai
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has urged the government to immediately release Durga Prasai. Issuing a statement on Saturday, the party said its serious attention has been drawn to what it described as the repeated arrest of Prasai with the intent to harass, discourage differing views and suppress dissent.
Cleanup carried out at Pashupati area in preparation for Maha Shivaratri
Cleanup activities have been carried out in the sacred Pashupati area, home to Pashupatinath—the revered deity of Vedic Sanatan Hindu followers worldwide and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—in preparation for the upcoming Maha Shivaratri festival. As part of the 665th week of the Bagmati River Cleanup Campaign, cleaning was conducted at Suryaghat, Aryaghat and the Ram Mandir areas within the Pashupati premises. Campaigner Kishor Singh Shahi said that four metric tons of waste were managed during the cleanup drive.
Strong security arrangements ensured for the election: Home Minister
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has said that strong security arrangements have been made for the March 5 election to the House of Representatives. Talking to media persons after receiving information about the election security and implementation of the code of conduct at the office of the Chief Returning Officer here today, he said that the government is committed to making strong security arrangements to hold the election in a fearless environment.
EC briefs election observers on HoR election management, code of conduct
The Election Commission (EC) has conducted an orientation programme for national election observer organisations, focusing on election management, legal frameworks and the code of conduct ahead of the House of Representatives (HoR) elections scheduled for March 5. During the programme, Election Management Division Chief and Joint Secretary Rajendra Kumar KC delivered a presentation on the management of the HoR elections for 2082 BS, detailing polling stations and centres, vote counting procedures, and the election schedule and programme.
Former police officer accused of rape arrested from India
Police have arrested former police officer Bhupendra Singh Thagunna, who was accused of rape, from Bengaluru, India. A team from the Crime Investigation Office took Thagunna into custody and sent him to the District Police Office, Birendranagar, Surkhet, for further investigation. A young woman from Jajarkot had filed a complaint against Thagunna, accusing him of rape. Seeking justice, the victim had been staging a hunger strike at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu since Mangsir 25.
PM Sushila Karki mourns untimely demise of actor Sunil Thapa
Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said she is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of popular Nepali actor Sunil Thapa. In a condolence message issued today, Prime Minister Karki stated that with Thapa’s passing, the Nepali and Indian film industries have lost not only a versatile actor but also a strong pillar of cinema. Recalling his memorable performances, she noted that Thapa’s roles, from Rate Kaila in Chino to the coach in Mary Kom, as both villain and supporting actor succeeded in winning the hearts of millions.
Koteshwor Bhat-Bhateni reopens after five months of reconstruction
The Bhat-Bhateni supermarket in Koteshwor, Kathmandu, which was looted, vandalized, and set on fire during the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9, has reopened to the public today. Chair Min Bahadur Gurung and other officials performed a special puja before resuming operations at the supermarket. The building, which was completely damaged during the unrest, underwent nearly five months of repair and reconstruction before reopening for customers.
Landslide prevention works begin on Beni-Jomsom road
Landslide prevention works have commenced on the Myagdi section of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road, a key route connecting China and India. The Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Project Office has launched the initiative to curb landslides and river erosion along the road at a cost of Rs 250 million. Madhav Nepal and Bhim Rawal block UML alliance bid within NCP
An electoral alliance between the CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has been effectively ruled out, with NCP Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ making it clear that his party will contest the upcoming elections independently. Although UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has not made a public statement on the issue, Prachanda has categorically dismissed the possibility of an alliance. Veteran actor Sunil Thapa passes away at 72
Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa has passed away after suffering a sudden health complication. He was rushed to Norvic International Hospital in Thapathali, where he breathed his last this morning. According to Mohan Niraula, President of the Actors’ Association of Nepal, Thapa died due to a heart attack. Thapa was widely known for his powerful portrayals of antagonist roles in Nepali cinema and earned lasting popularity under the screen name ‘Rate Kaila’.
Even if he wins, Rabi Lamichhane cannot assume office due to pending cases
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane is contesting the House of Representatives election from Chitwan constituency No. 2 for the third time. However, even if he wins the election, he will not be able to assume any constitutional or executive position due to multiple ongoing legal cases. Based on the increase in votes he received in the April 2023 by-election compared to the November 2022 general election, observers estimate that Lamichhane remains electorally strong in Chitwan-2. Nevertheless, unresolved court cases mean he cannot serve as a lawmaker, minister or prime minister even if elected.
