POKHARA: Landslide prevention works have commenced on the Myagdi section of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road, a key route connecting China and India.
The Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Project Office has launched the initiative to curb landslides and river erosion along the road at a cost of Rs 250 million. Landslides and erosion have regularly disrupted traffic on this crucial route.
Project sub-engineer Bahadur Shah said the contractor aims to complete the works within the current fiscal year. He added that the landslide and erosion prevention measures are being implemented in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2, covering lower and upper Baisari, Nagdhunga, Guithebhir, Khambhitta, Latokhola, Rupse, Setokhola, and Larjung.
Shah said techniques like rock anchoring, palm wall construction, and bioengineering are being used to prevent landslides.
In Annapurna Rural Municipality-3, Bamti/Konda/Tista JV secured a Rs 70 million contract to prevent landslides over a 300-metre stretch in Khambhitta, Dana. Meanwhile, GSPL/Buddhisara JV has received a Rs 90 million contract to stabilize a 300-metre section in Guithebhir, and Gajendra Construction Services is undertaking work worth Rs 70 million for Latokhola, Rupse, Nagdhunga, and Setokhola.
On Rupse, concrete placement has been completed over 160 metres, while widening works using rock anchoring at Latokhola are in the final stage.
Additionally, GSI/Hutaraj JV has been awarded a Rs 20 million contract to prevent landslides in lower and upper Baisari. By drilling into hills beneath the road, placing rods, concreting bases, and constructing solid walls, the road towards Dil has been widened.
These measures are expected to reduce traffic disruptions and improve road safety on this strategic trans-Himalayan route.
