Congress responds to Gagan–Bishwo: A special convention cannot be called at an individual’s will

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress Central Working Committee has declared that the demand for a special general convention has lost its relevance. The party has also clarified that a special convention can only be held in accordance with the party statute.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said that the Central Working Committee meeting held on November 1, 2025 had unanimously approved the schedule for the 15th general convention and that necessary procedures were already underway. “In this context, the demand for a special general convention has automatically ended, as clearly stated by the Central Working Committee meeting held on January 2, 2026,” the statement said.

The Congress stated that the renewal of active membership, distribution of new memberships and ward-level conventions are mandatory procedures for holding the general convention. It also noted that the list of active members has not yet been submitted to the Central Working Committee and that nominations of proportional representation candidates have already been registered with the Election Commission.

The party has appealed to all office-bearers, members, general convention representatives, Mahasamiti members, sister and fraternal organizations, well-wishers and Nepali Congress coordination committees abroad not to participate in any special convention or convention called at an individual level.

Additionally, the Congress has urged all party committees, members and supporters at every level to play an active role in ensuring the success of party candidates in the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Stressing that only decisions taken in line with the party statute are valid, Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel said that priority should be given to the party’s prestige and internal unity.
