Amid internal disputes, NC disgruntled faction announces special general convention

KATHMANDU: The disgruntled faction of Nepali Congress (NC) has announced a special general convention in the midst of internal disagreements, with supporters stating that it has become a necessary step due to delays in holding the 15th general convention.

The Special General Convention Communication and Publicity Committee held a press conference and announced that the special convention will be held on January 11 and 12 in Kathmandu.

“The party had initially released a schedule to hold the 15th general convention by January 12, but it could not take place on time,” supporters of the special general convention said in a statement. “Under these circumstances, a special general convention has automatically become a necessary option.”

Supporters emphasized that the decision was made in a compelling situation. “Fully respecting the spirit of the party statute, we sincerely request all central convention delegates to attend and actively participate in the special general convention in Kathmandu on January 11 and 12,” the statement added.

They have also written to local authorities to arrange for peace and security during the event. The supporters have reportedly booked Bhrikuti Mandap in Kathmandu as the venue for the convention.

During the press conference, they said that various subcommittees have already been formed to organize the special general convention. Meanwhile, NC General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma have stated that a special general convention is not an option since the regular general convention schedule has been affected.

The party led by President Sher Bahadur Deuba has also maintained that a special general convention cannot be held before the House of Representatives elections on March 5.
