Nepali Congress General Convention: Nomination ends, race for joint general secretaries heats up



KATHMANDU: Nomination filing for various posts concluded on Tuesday at the Nepali Congress’ ongoing 15th General Convention in Kathmandu, with leaders registering their candidacies as the closed session and electoral process move forward.

Three candidates have registered for the post of party president: Shyam Krishna Khadgi, Gagan Kumar Thapa and Kishor Singh Rathore. Likewise, Bishwo Prakash Sharma is the sole candidate for senior vice president, while Pushpa Bhusal has registered her candidacy for the women’s vice president post. Sharma and Bhusal have therefore been elected unopposed.

Nine leaders are contesting for the open vice president posts. They are Dr Chandra Mohan Yadav, Surendra Raj Pandey, Dr Minendra Rijal, Govinda Bhattarai, Devraj Chalise, Madhu Prasad Acharya, Dhanraj Gurung, Dipak Giri and Dr Chandra Bhandari.

Five candidates have registered for the inclusive vice president post: Binod Chaudhary, Farmullah Mansur, Jeevan Pariyar, Ranjit Karna and Sita Gurung.

Eight candidates are contesting for the open general secretary posts, while three are contesting under the women’s category. The open candidates are Shankar Tiwari, Sunil Sharma, Nain Singh Mahar, Pradeep Paudel, Gururaj Ghimire, Amar Singh Pun, Udaya Shumsher Rana and Santosh Upadhyay.

Dila Sangraula, Rita Khanal and Mahalakshmi Upadhyay ‘Dina’ are contesting for the women’s general secretary post.

A large number of candidates have also registered for joint general secretary posts under various categories and clusters. Nanu Bastola and Pratima Gautam are contesting for women’s joint general secretary, while Devendra Raj Kandel, Ramhari Khatiwada and Dilli Ram Subedi are contesting under the open category.

Jeevan Bahadur Shahi and Min Bham are contesting from the backward region category. Manoj Mani Acharya, Ajay Babu Shivakoti and Jagadishwar Narsingh KC are contesting under the Khas-Arya category, while Tejulal Chaudhary and Yogendra Chaudhary are contesting under the Tharu category.

Likewise, Bahadur Singh Lama is contesting under the indigenous nationalities category, Anggelu Sherpa under the minority category, Abdul Sattar under the Muslim category and Abhishek Pratap Shah under the Madhesi category.

Four candidates are contesting for the Dalit joint general secretary post: Laxmi Pariyar, Prakash Rasaili ‘Snehi’, Man Bahadur Nepali and Narendra Paswan.
