Nepal, China discuss strengthening parliamentary and bilateral ties in Tanzania

KATHMANDU: A Nepali delegation led by Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal and a Chinese delegation attending the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tanzania held a meeting on Tuesday.

The two sides discussed ways to further strengthen Nepal-China relations at the people-to-people level as well as parliamentary ties in the days ahead.

During the meeting, Speaker Aryal said Nepal and China share close and longstanding ties based on friendship, good neighborliness, mutual respect and the principles of Panchasheel, according to his secretariat.

Aryal reiterated Nepal’s firm commitment to the One China policy and said Nepali territory would not be allowed to be used for activities directed against China.

He expressed appreciation for China’s continued support in helping Nepal transition from a landlocked to a land-linked country and stressed the need to make development cooperation between the two countries more effective, according to the secretariat.

Aryal also expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by recent floods and landslides in Rasuwa and extended condolences to the families of Chinese nationals who went missing in the disaster.

He thanked the Chinese government for providing emergency financial assistance, humanitarian support and search and rescue assistance following the disaster. China had deployed tunnel rescue teams, forensic and DNA experts, as well as equipment including drones.

Aryal expressed confidence that the parliamentary friendship group formed between Nepal and China, along with the understanding on inter-parliamentary cooperation between Nepal’s House of Representatives and China’s National People’s Congress, would further promote parliamentary exchanges and mutual understanding between the two countries.
