Anyone leaking sensitive state information will face action: Home Minister

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudan Gurung has vowed to take action against anyone who breaches the confidentiality entrusted to them by the state, saying no one will be spared for deliberately leaking sensitive information.

Gurung made the statement in a social media post on Tuesday. He said anyone who deliberately betrays the state or their organization by misusing confidential information entrusted to them will not receive immunity and will be brought to justice.

On Monday, the government suspended Armed Police Force AIG Banshiraj Dahal from his post over allegations of leaking sensitive information. The Home Ministry accused Dahal of violating official conduct and leaking sensitive information.

Gurung said he had long observed a tendency among officials and employees working at the Ministry of Home Affairs and its subordinate agencies to disregard their responsibilities and share confidential or sensitive information with unauthorized individuals or organizations.

“I have long observed the tendency of officials and employees working at the Ministry of Home Affairs and its subordinate bodies to forget their official responsibilities and leak confidential or sensitive information to unauthorized persons or organizations,” he wrote.

He added that sensitive state information is not anyone’s private property but a public responsibility.

“Being in a position gives one access to information, but it does not give anyone the right to misuse it,” Gurung wrote. “Even the smallest piece of information, clue or secret received here can play a decisive role in preventing crime, advancing investigations or establishing the truth about a serious incident in the future.”
