KANCHANPUR: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Meteorological Forecasting Division has urged residents to remain alert as heavy rainfall is likely in Dodhara Chandani, Bhimdatta and Bedkot municipalities of Kanchanpur.
Issuing a weather forecast bulletin, the division urged authorities and residents in the three municipalities to remain prepared and vigilant, warning that water levels in small rivers and streams could rise significantly.
Sunil Chand, disaster focal person at Bedkot Municipality, said the local government was on standby.
“We have asked the municipal police and ward chairpersons to remain prepared,” he said. “We have also kept the necessary materials ready.”
Amrit Bik, disaster focal person at Dodhara Chandani Municipality, said the municipality was also in a state of preparedness.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division has urged concerned agencies to increase river monitoring, keep local governments and communities informed, and begin necessary preparations.
Kanchanpur has been experiencing continuous rainfall since early Sunday morning. After the water level in the Mahakali River crossed the alert threshold, the Indian side restricted traffic at the Sharda Barrage in Banbasa, which connects Nepal and India.
Area Police Office Gaddachauki chief Jeevan Gurung said the Mahakali River’s flow had reached 133,888 cusecs per second as measured at 5 pm.
Four-wheeled vehicles have been restricted from operating on the Sharda Barrage on security grounds whenever the Mahakali River’s flow exceeds 100,000 cusecs.
