KATHMANDU: A total of 1,331 bodies have been recovered so far following the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on August 20. Around 5,000 people remain missing after being swept away by the flood.
The Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have intensified search and rescue operations for those still missing. According to updated figures released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Chitwan has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 360 bodies recovered.
Similarly, 222 bodies have been recovered in Nawalparasi East, 219 in Nawalparasi West, 195 in Nuwakot, 156 in Rasuwa, 74 in Gorkha, 67 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahun. Of the bodies recovered so far, only 98 have been identified and handed over to their families, according to the authority.
According to NEA spokesperson Shanti Mahat, those still missing include around 2,340 people from Nuwakot, 1,967 from Rasuwa, 589 foreign nationals, and 100 security personnel and government employees.
Meanwhile, 13,101 people have been rescued from flood-affected areas. Of them, 4,162 were rescued by the Nepal Army, 4,068 by the Nepal Police and 4,871 by the Armed Police Force.
A total of 5,929 people injured or otherwise affected by the floods have received medical treatment. The Nepal Army treated 3,297 people, the Armed Police Force treated 2,316, while 316 received treatment at various hospitals.
As many as 3,982 displaced people are currently taking shelter at 41 holding centers established in Kathmandu, Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Government agencies and security personnel have been continuously mobilized to provide relief and support rehabilitation efforts for those displaced by the disaster.
