Guru Baral accuses govt of authoritarian mindset

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Guru Baral has accused the current government of moving forward with what he described as “undemocratic and authoritarian thinking,” saying it is drifting toward an “elected authoritarian model.”

Speaking during Sunday’s special hour in the House of Representatives, Baral said he has serious disagreements with contradictory statements from the ruling side as the government completes its first 100 days in office, as well as with the constitutional amendment process initiated through the Prime Minister’s Office.

He argued that the way parliamentary rules of procedure were “forced through” in the House had undermined democratic norms and embarrassed the ruling coalition, adding that it amounted to a violation of the rule of law.

Baral further alleged that successive actions against constitutional bodies have raised questions over legal governance in the country. He also objected to what he described as instructions from the Office of the Attorney General to postpone hearings related to cases involving Gen-Z movement accused, calling it contrary to legal principles.

Turning to the economy, the UML lawmaker said the decline in the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) since the formation of the government contradicts its claim of building a strong economic foundation, arguing that market performance reflects a lack of economic stability.

He warned that weakening institutional checks and declining investor confidence could further undermine economic recovery efforts.
