KATHMANDU: The government has scrapped provisions related to trade unions within the civil service.
The move comes amid concerns that politically affiliated trade unions had long affected administrative efficiency, according to the government.
Section Officer at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, Bibek Bidari, stated that Section 53 of the Civil Service Act, 2049, has been repealed through the Ordinance on Some Nepal Acts Amendment, 2083. With this, civil service trade unions no longer exist legally.
Following the new provision, the ministry has directed all ministries, departments, commissions, secretariats, and other government bodies to shut down trade union offices.
Concerned offices have also been instructed to immediately return all government property used by these unions, including buildings, office spaces, vehicles, and other facilities.
The ministry further urged employees previously affiliated with trade unions to resume their assigned duties and directed offices to manage work responsibilities accordingly.
