KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has said the government is taking the situation of Nepalis affected by the ongoing conflict in West Asia seriously and is prepared to facilitate their return if necessary.
Speaking to journalists at Singha Durbar on Monday, Khanal said the government is closely monitoring the situation and making necessary arrangements to assist Nepalis facing difficulties due to the conflict.
He informed that more than 88,000 names have been collected for facilitation purposes, adding that the government is working based on the urgency of those needing immediate return to Nepal.
However, Khanal clarified that most issues faced by Nepalis in the region are related to routine matters such as visa complications and work leave, rather than direct impacts of the conflict. He noted that there is currently no significant pressure on Nepalis to return home due to war or security threats.
The minister also said that the recent rise in petroleum prices, triggered by the conflict, has led to decisions such as two-day weekends in government offices and public institutions, along with schools and colleges. He added that authorities are studying potential future challenges that may arise from the situation.
Khanal further warned of a possible fertilizer shortage this year and said a report with recommendations for preparedness will be submitted to the Cabinet by Tuesday.
