HoR polls: Women outnumber men among youth candidates on PR closed list



KATHMANDU: Women outnumber men among youth candidates included in the closed list under the proportional representation (PR) system for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election, according to data released by the Election Commission (EC).

The closed list includes candidates ranging in age from 25 to over 80. EC Assistant Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC said a total of 3,135 candidates have been nominated under the PR system, including 1,772 women and 1,363 men.

Age-wise, women dominate the younger brackets. In the 25-29 age group, there are 168 candidates, 117 women and 51 men. The 30-34 age group includes 285 candidates, with 201 women and 84 men, while the 35-39 age group has 401 candidates, including 268 women and 133 men. Similarly, in the 40-44 age group, 535 candidates have been nominated, of whom 341 are women and 194 men.

In the middle-age categories, the trend begins to shift. The 45–49 age group includes 456 candidates (294 women and 162 men), while the 50–54 age group has 386 candidates, including 220 women and 166 men. Men outnumber women in older age brackets, with 355 candidates aged 55-59 (155 women and 200 men) and 261 candidates aged 60-64 (103 women and 158 men).

Among older candidates, there are 158 candidates in the 65–69 age group (44 women and 114 men), 86 in the 70–74 age group (19 women and 67 men), 32 in the 75-79 age group (nine women and 23 men), and 12 candidates aged over 80, including one woman and 11 men.

Under the inclusive categories of the PR list, 911 candidates are from Indigenous Nationalities, 946 from the Khas Arya group, 425 from the Dalit quota, 203 from the Tharu community, 502 from the Madhesi category, and 148 from Muslim communities.

A total of 64 political parties submitted closed lists to the EC on December 28 and 29. Of these, only 22 parties nominated candidates in all 110 constituencies.

The EC said it has removed the names of 76 candidates from the PR closed list following complaints filed with the Office of the Election Officer regarding the nominations submitted by political parties.
