HoR election: EC to deploy volunteers in all wards for voter education
The Election Commission (EC) has decided to depute volunteers in all wards across the country to conduct voter education programmes ahead of the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5. According to the EC, voter education volunteers will be mobilised in all 6,743 voting stations through the District Election Offices. The initiative aims to inform voters about the election process, voting procedures and related responsibilities. Assistant Spokesperson of the EC, Kul Bahadur GC, said that experienced child development facilitators, women health volunteers and community service centre operators will be appointed as voter education volunteers. He added that the process of appointing volunteers has already begun.
HoR election: Ballot printing completed in 60 districts
The Election Commission (EC) has announced that the printing of ballot papers for the upcoming election has been completed in all 60 districts, with packing work currently underway. According to the Commission, both printing and packing of direct ballot papers have been completed in several districts, including Dolpa, Mugu, Jumla, Kalikot, Humla, Jajarkot, Dailekh, Rukum (West), Salyan, Surkhet, Bajura and Achham. Similarly, ballot papers have been printed and packed in 25 districts, including Bajhang, Doti, Dadeldhura, Darchula, Baitadi, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Panchthar, Ilam, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Okhaldhunga and Sunsari. While printing has been completed in all 60 districts, packing work in some districts is still pending.
Supreme Court upholds Pradeep Adhikari’s detention order
The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld the detention order against Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) Director General Pradeep Adhikari, who was arrested on corruption charges related to the construction of the Nalinchowk heliport. On Friday, a joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Shantisingh Thapa upheld an earlier order of the Special Court directing that Adhikari be kept in detention for trial. Earlier, a joint bench of Special Court Justices Hemanta Rawal, Dilli Ratna Shrestha and Bidur Koirala had ordered Adhikari’s detention. Challenging that decision, Adhikari had filed a petition at the Supreme Court.
1.3 million ballot papers being printed daily for HoR election
Janak Education Materials Centre Limited (JEMCL), Sanothimi, is printing around 1.3 million ballot papers daily for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5. JEMCL Managing Director Yadunath Paudel said that out of a total requirement of 20.3 million ballot papers for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, 8 million had been printed by Thursday evening. “At present, we are printing up to 1.3 million ballot papers per day. All remaining ballot papers will be printed within a week, after which packaging will begin,” Paudel said. He added that the center has already completed printing and packaging 20.83 million ballot papers for the proportional representation (PR) system. Of these, 1 million sample ballot papers have already been distributed by the Election Commission (EC) to various locations.
UML Chair Oli claims UML victory certain in Jhapa
Chairman of the CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has claimed that his party is certain to win in the upcoming elections, asserting strong voter support in Jhapa. Speaking to journalists at Chandragadhi Airport on Friday after returning from Kathmandu, Oli said that victory in Jhapa was assured, stating, “Sun’s victory is certain,” in reference to the UML’s election symbol. Oli said that voters in Jhapa are firmly in favour of the UML and described the election atmosphere as encouraging. He noted increased participation by young people in the campaign, saying that youth have joined spontaneously to ensure the party’s victory. “It is a positive sign that the new generation is entering politics and showing interest in learning,” he said. Oli added that no conspiracy could prevent the UML’s victory, claiming that the people stand for truth and development. Oli is contesting the House of Representatives election from Jhapa-5.
EC monitoring media content: Acting CEC Bhandari
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has urged the media to publish and disseminate fair, factual and unbiased news while covering the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election, scheduled for March 5. Speaking to journalists at Janak Education Material Centre Limited in Sanothimi, Bhandari cautioned against producing or circulating biased and one-sided news or opinions during the election period. He said the media should refrain from taking sides for or against any political party or candidate, particularly while expressing opinions, and instead focus on reporting based on facts and truth as the election environment has already been created and polling day approaches.
Gagan Thapa says country needs responsible power amid extreme distrust
Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Kumar Thapa has stressed the need for a responsible political force to steer the country through a period of extreme despair and public distrust. Addressing a party assembly in Kaski, Thapa said that instead of spreading agitation, Nepali Congress should play a role in patiently guiding the nation toward solutions. He highlighted that society is currently marked by deep anger among citizens and a severe lack of trust in state institutions. “The country needs a power that can manage the situation. Anyone can light a fire, but it takes patience and capacity to put it out. That strength must come from us,” Thapa said. “Anyone can spread excitement, but what we need is a power that practices conscious politics. That is Congress. We will unify; we will manage.”
HoR polls: Women outnumber men among youth candidates on PR closed list
Women outnumber men among youth candidates included in the closed list under the proportional representation (PR) system for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election, according to data released by the Election Commission (EC). The closed list includes candidates ranging in age from 25 to over 80. EC Assistant Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC said a total of 3,135 candidates have been nominated under the PR system, including 1,772 women and 1,363 men. Age-wise, women dominate the younger brackets. In the 25-29 age group, there are 168 candidates, 117 women and 51 men. The 30-34 age group includes 285 candidates, with 201 women and 84 men, while the 35-39 age group has 401 candidates, including 268 women and 133 men. Similarly, in the 40-44 age group, 535 candidates have been nominated, of whom 341 are women and 194 men.
NA endorses National Forensic Laboratory Bill
The National Assembly (NA) on Thursday unanimously endorsed the National Forensic Laboratory (Establishment and Operation) Bill, 2081 BS. The Bill was passed at today’s meeting of the Upper House after being tabled by Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Sinha on behalf of Prime Minister Sushila Karki and the Minister for Education, Science and Technology. Earlier, Minister Sinha had presented a proposal seeking the Assembly’s approval of the Bill, as well as a separate proposal for deliberation on the Bill along with the report of the Legislative Management Committee. Both proposals were unanimously approved by the NA.
Durga Prasai arrested in Kathmandu for violating election code
Durga Prasai was arrested on Friday from Chalnakhel, Dakshinkali Municipality, Kathmandu, for allegedly violating the election code. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Awasthi, spokesperson of the Cyber Bureau, the arrest followed a directive from the Election Commission to take action against Prasai under the election code. This is not Prasai’s first arrest. He was previously taken into custody on January 19 in Pokhara after making controversial statements regarding a disputed Rs 520 million donation to the Election Commission by supporters of the Nepali Congress Special General Convention. The Cyber Bureau confirmed that legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the election regulations.
Central Security Committee bans use of drones during elections
The Central Security Committee has decided to ban the use of drones during the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) elections. A meeting of the Committee held on Friday reviewed the progress of work being carried out under the Integrated Election Security Plan–2082, including manpower mobilisation and security arrangements, according to Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Ananda Kafle. The meeting also decided to further strengthen the modern police unit established to prevent the misuse of social media and to take legal action against individuals involved in anti-election activities.
Syringe attack in Jhapa leaves one dead
A man has died following a suspected syringe attack in Bhadrapur Municipality–10, Satrabighe, in Jhapa district. The deceased has been identified as Khem Dhakal, a local resident. According to the District Police Office, Dhakal was attacked by unknown individuals last evening while returning home from a neighbour’s house. He was critically injured and died on the way to the hospital. Police spokesperson Khagendra Bahadur Khadka said that a 26-year-old man, Dipesh Kumar Singh of Siraha district, has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
Coal mine explosion in India kills 18, including two Nepalis
Two Nepali youths were killed in a coal mine explosion in Meghalaya, India, officials and local sources said. The victims have been identified as brothers Purna Bahadur Khapangi Magar, 27, and Surendra Khapangi Magar, 24, residents of Salgharibhanjyang, Barahapokhari Rural Municipality-1 in Khotang district. Both died on the spot when an explosion occurred on Thursday at a coal mine operating in Umsanghat, Meghalaya. Local resident Shiva Kumar Shrestha said the deceased were sons of Khadga Bahadur Khapangi Magar and Tanka Kumari Khapangi Magar.

Political parties and independent candidates are set for a closely watched contest in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election in the Himalayan district of Myagdi, which has a single parliamentary constituency. Reconstruction of historic Gahana Pokhari in Hadigaun progresses rapidly
The reconstruction of the historic Gahana Pokhari in Hadigaun, Kathmandu, is moving forward at a rapid pace. The project, undertaken by Kathmandu Metropolitan City under the Heritage Conservation and Urban Development Program, aims to restore the pond and surrounding structures in their original style. According to the municipality, work officially began after the completion of a religious ritual, Kshama Puja. The restoration, estimated to cost between Rs 5.2 to 5.5 million, will preserve the pond’s authentic character. Alongside the pond, the surrounding areas are being upgraded with wider footpaths, traditional balustrades, expanded green and child-friendly spaces, and tourist assistance centers.
RSP expresses deep grief over death of 4-year-old in Rautahat election campaign accident
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a four-year-old girl hit by a vehicle used during the party’s election campaign in Rautahat. In a statement issued Friday, General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti said the incident has left the party shocked and saddened. He paid tribute to the deceased child and assured that the party will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. RSP stated that it is committed to supporting local authorities for an objective inquiry and ensuring justice for the victim’s family in accordance with legal procedures. Efforts are also underway from the party’s side to provide relief and assistance to the affected family. The party has instructed strict measures to prevent such incidents in future, emphasizing careful management of vehicles used during election campaigns. Gold prices fall again in Nepal, silver also declines
Gold prices in the Nepali market have fallen for the second consecutive day. On Thursday, the price of gold dropped by Rs 9,500 per tola, while on Friday it fell further by Rs 4,200 per tola. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, gold is now trading at Rs 2,91,000 per tola. On Thursday, the price had been Rs 2,95,200 per tola. Silver prices also declined, falling Rs 270 per tola to reach Rs 4,710. On Thursday, silver had traded at Rs 4,980 per tola, the association added.
Energy production must be increased for prosperous Nepal: Kulman Ghising
Ujyalo Nepal Party Chairman Kulman Ghising has said that increasing production in the energy sector is essential to making Nepal prosperous. Speaking at a press conference organized by the party in Rajbiraj on Friday, Ghising stressed the need for self-reliance in electricity generation along with the development of the agricultural sector to achieve economic prosperity. He said the initiatives and reforms he led in the energy sector have provided a practical and implementable model for the country. Ghising said his experience could be utilized for Nepal’s overall economic transformation, adding that the country has the potential to generate up to 30,000 megawatts of electricity within the next 10 years and earn substantial income from the sector.
Baitadi man found dead in India after going missing from Bengaluru
A man from Baitadi who had gone missing from Bengaluru, India, has been found dead, family sources confirmed. Harish Lohar of Sunkhola Khaligada in Dogadakedar Rural Municipality–3, Baitadi, had been out of contact for several days before his body was discovered in Devanahalli area of India. Family members said Lohar had gone to Bengaluru two years ago for employment. After he stopped responding to calls, relatives had begun searching for him. Lohar is survived by his wife and two sons. Local police in India have been informed about the incident. The cause of death has not yet been ascertained, and further investigation is underway.
Two arrested for cheating people of Rs 1.75 million
Police have arrested two individuals on charges of cheating people of a total of Rs 1.75 million by luring them with promises of employment in Australia and Slovakia. The arrested have been identified as Rupesh Lamichhane, 35, of Panchkhal Municipality-3 in Kavrepalanchowk, and Hira Tamang, 35, of Khaneba Rural Municipality-3 in Dhading, according to Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Rameshwor Karki. Police said the arrests were made based on complaints filed by the victims. Lamichhane allegedly cheated a victim of Rs 900,000 on the pretext of sending him to Australia, while Tamang is accused of defrauding Rs 850,000 by promising employment in Slovakia.
PCN to strengthen monitoring of election Code of Conduct
Press Council Nepal (PCN) is set to roll out nationwide programmes on the election code of conduct and the role of media across major cities in all seven provinces, aiming to make monitoring of the election code of conduct more effective ahead of the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) election. The statutory body responsible for developing and enforcing the journalists’ code of conduct and monitoring media content has decided to further strengthen oversight of the election code of conduct enforced by the Election Commission Nepal.
Four arrested in Surkhet with brown sugar drugs
The District Police Office, Surkhet, has arrested four individuals in Birendranagar in connection with brown sugar drugs. Deputy Superintendent of Police and spokesperson Mohanjung Budhathapa identified the arrested as Arjun Kumar Prajapati, 21, of Birendranagar Municipality-3; Lalita Singh Thakuri, 22, of Ward No. 7; Ramesh Rawal, 18, of Narharinath Rural Municipality-9, Kalikot; and Arjun Budha, 22, of Thakurbaba Municipality-7, Bardiya. Police recovered 1.56 grams of brown sugar and 31 nitrazepam tablets from them.
