KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa has asserted that his moral standing remains strong, rejecting allegations linking him to the controversy surrounding the party’s legitimacy.
In a video message released on Thursday, Thapa said attempts had been made to defame him by associating him with alleged middleman Inam Sapkota in the dispute over the Nepali Congress’s legitimacy.
“I, Gagan Thapa, your brother, your friend, your son and your party president, am not standing on any weak moral ground,” he said. “I have always maintained that my hands are clean and my conscience is clear. If that were not the case, would I have had the courage to fight?”
Thapa recalled that he had consistently challenged wrongdoing, even under governments more powerful than his own. He also said he had never hesitated to question misconduct by governments led by his own party.
“Is it just me today? I have challenged stronger governments when they did wrong. Even when my own party was in government, I never stopped speaking out against wrongdoing. Where does that courage come from? If I had compromised my integrity and honesty, would I have had the courage to speak up? I would not have,” he said.
Thapa further said he had repeatedly faced controversies and challenges throughout his political career but had managed to overcome them.
“Controversies have been created around me, and my character has been questioned extensively. Every time, I have fought back and survived. I have not fallen. Do you know why?” he said.
Acknowledging the goodwill and blessings of his supporters, Thapa said his moral strength and clean record had been the greatest sources of his resilience.
“Your good wishes and blessings are important, but the biggest strength is my moral standing. The reason I have survived these battles is that I am clean, honest and on the right side. So, rest assured,” he added.
