60,570 families in Jhapa apply for land ownership certificates

JHAPA: More than 60,000 families in Jhapa district, including landless Dalits, other landless residents and unorganised settlers, have applied for land ownership certificates, according to the District Land Problem Resolution Committee.

The committee reported that a total of 60,570 families have submitted applications seeking land ownership certificates.

According to Chief District Officer Shravan Kumar Pokharel, who chairs the committee, the applicants include 2,896 landless Dalit families, 15,783 other landless families and 41,851 families classified as unorganised settlers.

In addition, the committee has recorded 5,296 families whose applications were received by previous commissions.

CDO Pokharel said the revenue rates applicable to land regularisation have been revised. Under the new provisions, a revenue rate equivalent to 12 percent of the minimum assessed land value has been set for residential purposes, while a 7 percent rate applies to agricultural land.

He said the committee was working intensively to resolve land-related problems faced by the public as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration Pratibha Rawal visited families in various municipalities of Jhapa on Monday and Tuesday. During the visits, she informed residents that the government was preparing to distribute land ownership certificates to provide a permanent solution to their long-standing land-related problems.

Minister Rawal also held discussions with the District Land Problem Resolution Committee and the chief administrative officers of the respective municipalities, stressing the need to prioritise the distribution of land ownership certificates.
