KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane has declined to comment on speculation that he could soon become Nepal’s Prime Minister (PM), while also revealing that he has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Nepal.
Speaking to reporters at Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday after returning from a five-day visit to India, Lamichhane was asked about opposition parties’ concerns and speculation regarding his possible rise to the premiership.
In response, he said, “I do not want to say anything about that.” However, Lamichhane reiterated his party’s commitment to political stability.
“I would like to ask everyone to read the document we released before the election once again. We are not in favor of instability; we are in favor of stability,” he said. He added that the Nepali people had voted with the expectation of a stable government.
“The Nepali people supported us for a stable government. We remain committed to the promises we made, both verbally and in writing, and we will continue to uphold them,” Lamichhane said.
During the same interaction, Lamichhane said he had invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Nepal.
“I have also invited the Indian Prime Minister to visit Nepal. Both the Prime Minister and the BJP leadership have responded positively,” he said. “We will continue to extend invitations to leaders of various political parties as needed. The visit will take place when both sides reach a mutual understanding.”
Lamichhane had traveled to India at the invitation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he held a series of high-level meetings.
During the visit, he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held discussions for about an hour.
