Landslide prevention project launched at Khambhitta along Kaligandaki Corridor

MYAGDI: A landslide prevention project has been launched at Khambhitta, a landslide-prone section of the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road in Myagdi district.

The Beni–Jomsom–Korala Road Project Office has initiated landslide and erosion control works along a 300-metre stretch at Khambhitta. According to Project Chief Tejaswi Sharma, a contract worth Rs 70 million has been awarded to a construction company for the implementation of the project. Bioengineering measures will also be carried out after the retaining structures are completed.

The road project office is implementing landslide and erosion control works at several vulnerable locations along the 76-kilometre Beni–Jomsom–Korala road, including Khambhitta, Lower Baisari, Upper Baisari, Nagdhunga, Guithebhir, Latokhola, Rupse, Setokhola and Larjung in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 250 million.

Project Chief Sharma said modern slope-stabilization techniques such as rock anchoring, palm walls, bioengineering and 3D mesh technology are being used to reduce landslide risks and protect the roadway.

The project is expected to be completed within the current fiscal year.
