Driver arrested for forcing microbus through risky BP Highway stretch in Kavre

KATHMANDU: Police have taken a microbus driver into custody for attempting to forcefully drive through a high-risk section of the BP Highway in Kavrepalanchok district.

The incident occurred between Laskot and Ghumaune in Roshi Rural Municipality–7, where security personnel had already restricted movement due to safety concerns. Despite repeated instructions from Nepal Police and traffic police to halt at a safe point, the driver allegedly proceeded recklessly into the swollen stretch.

According to the District Police Office, Kavre, the driver was detained for endangering passengers and violating safety directives. Further investigation into the case is underway.

Earlier on Monday night, security forces rescued 89 passengers from five microbuses stranded in the same area after the vehicles got stuck.

Authorities had suspended movement along the route on Monday evening after floodwaters triggered by heavy rainfall began washing away a temporary diversion built along the highway in the Roshi area. However, some drivers reportedly ignored the restrictions and attempted to cross the affected section.

Police have urged the public to assess road conditions carefully and follow official advisories before travelling, especially during the monsoon season.
