KATHMANDU: Gagan Kumar Thapa, president of the Nepali Congress, has intensified meetings with senior party leaders to discuss internal strategy and current political developments.
According to his personal secretary Shankar Kuinkel, Thapa is scheduled to hold separate meetings on Tuesday with senior leader Shekhar Koirala in the morning and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka in the evening.
Thapa had informed party office-bearers about the planned meetings during the Central Working Committee meeting held on Monday.
Sources said the meeting with Koirala is scheduled for 10 am, where Thapa will hold one-on-one discussions. Likewise, the meeting with Khadka is set for 5 pm, where vice-president Bishwa Prakash Sharma is also expected to be present. The venue of both meetings has not been disclosed.
The meetings are seen as part of Thapa’s effort to build a common understanding on internal power balance and the party’s future course. Earlier, on April 19, Thapa had visited Khadka’s residence in Golfutar for discussions.
With new alignments emerging within the party over its internal functioning and role in governance, Thapa’s increased engagements are being viewed as politically significant.
