Police shoot and arrest suspect over Rs 10.4 million gold jewelry theft in Kathmandu



KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a suspect involved in the theft of gold jewelry worth Rs 10.45 million from a house in Boudha Tusal, Kathmandu Metropolitan City–6, after shooting him during an operation.

The suspect, identified as Prem Chaudhary of Banke, was arrested last night from Nagarjun Municipality–6 after police opened fire in self-defence, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Thapa.

Police said Chaudhary had stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 10.45 million from the residence of Rinjee Lama in Tusal on Tuesday around noon. A total of 65 tola of gold jewelry was recovered from his possession at the time of arrest.

SSP Thapa said police were forced to fire after the suspect attacked officers with a khukuri. Chaudhary was shot in the leg and has been admitted to the Trauma Center for treatment.

One police personnel was also injured during the operation, police said.
