Nepali Congress holds central working committee meeting amid fears of party split

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) convened its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Monday afternoon at the party’s Saneppa office in Lalitpur, amid concerns of a potential party division.

Party sources said the meeting will primarily discuss alliance strategies for the upcoming National Assembly elections scheduled for January 25.

At the same time, General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwprakash Sharma raised the issue of the special general convention called for January 10. President Sher Bahadur Deuba had already annulled the special convention through a prior CWC meeting. Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, on behalf of Deuba, has instead announced that the regular 15th general convention will begin on May 11.

However, the two general secretaries remain firm on holding the special general convention. Citing Article 17 (2) of the party statute, they argue that the statutory provision makes the convention mandatory, which prompted the CWC to convene on Monday.

Party insiders indicate that the meeting is likely to be tense, as it seeks to balance internal statutory obligations with the president’s earlier decisions while addressing factional pressures ahead of critical electoral and organizational deadlines.
