KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has instructed party lawmakers to prepare for a struggle to defend democracy, the Constitution and national interests.
Speaking at a meeting of the UML Parliamentary Party held at the party office in Chyasal on Sunday, Oli said there were two fronts for peaceful struggle to defend democracy, the Constitution and national interests: the “street” and Parliament. He instructed lawmakers to prepare for a strong movement and struggle.
Oli said that although the UML is numerically a small opposition party in Parliament, it bears a major responsibility for defending democracy and the Constitution because of its historic role in their establishment.
UML Chief Whip Ain Mahar said Oli also instructed lawmakers to ensure a qualitative and effective presence in Parliament by thoroughly preparing on issues, consulting experts and strongly raising matters concerning the people.
According to Mahar, the meeting concluded that the current government had failed to strengthen democracy, protect the Constitution and address issues concerning people’s livelihoods, and was continuously moving toward what the party described as an authoritarian course.
He also accused the government of failing to make lawmakers accountable, placing them under the shadow of the executive, and attempting to turn lawmakers into “puppets” by disregarding the public mandate.
