KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has stressed the need for collective efforts to eliminate caste-based discrimination and untouchability, saying the National Day for Eradication of Caste Discrimination and Untouchability serves as a reminder of Nepal’s commitment to equality, social justice, and human dignity.
Extending his best wishes to all Nepalis on the occasion, President Paudel wished for happiness, peace, prosperity, and social harmony among Nepali sisters and brothers living both at home and abroad.
The day is observed annually to commemorate the government’s declaration of Nepal as a caste discrimination-free nation on June 4, 2006 (Jestha 21, 2063 BS).
Referring to the Constitution of Nepal, the President said the country is founded on the principles of unity in diversity, embracing its multi-ethnic, multilingual, multi-religious, multicultural, and geographically diverse character.
He noted that the Constitution envisions the elimination of all forms of class, caste, regional, linguistic, religious, and gender-based discrimination to ensure economic equality, prosperity, social justice, and an egalitarian society based on proportional inclusion and participation.
Stating that inhumane practices such as caste discrimination and untouchability cannot be eradicated through legal measures alone, President Paudel emphasized the need to foster awareness, tolerance, and mutual respect at all levels of society.
According to him, the day reinforces the spirit of unity in diversity and reminds all Nepalis of their collective responsibility to build an egalitarian, civilized, and inclusive society.
“Caste discrimination and untouchability are crimes against social, moral, and human dignity,” the President said in his message.
He called on individuals, families, communities, government bodies at all three levels, political parties, civil society, national and international organizations, and the media to play a more active role in promoting social awareness, equality, mutual harmony, cooperation, and national unity.
The President also urged all stakeholders to stand firmly against all forms of caste-based discrimination and untouchability and contribute to building a more inclusive and equitable society.
