EOC Nepal mobilises 700 observers ahead of March 5 HoR voting

KATHMANDU: The Election Observation Committee Nepal has mobilised 700 national election observers across the country in view of the House of Representatives (HoR) voting scheduled for March 5.

EOC Nepal, one of the oldest organisations authorised to observe elections in the country, stated that it has deployed observers for both long-term monitoring and emergency observation purposes.

The organisation noted that the use of social media has become more widespread in this election compared to previous polls. In response, it has formed a special technical team to closely monitor potential violations of the election code of conduct through the misuse of cyberspace.

According to EOC Nepal Vice-Chair Badri Prasad Siwakoti, continued dissemination of election publicity materials through digital platforms and social media has raised concerns.

He said the sharing of digital content and messages aimed at influencing voters in favour of specific candidates and political parties, along with the circulation of misleading information, has contributed to breaches of the election code of conduct.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission Nepal has granted permission to 39 national organisations and four international organisations to observe the March 5 HoR elections.

Authorities have intensified monitoring and security arrangements to ensure free, fair and credible voting.
