UML voices concern over misuse of social media during election campaign

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has expressed serious concern over what it says is the growing misuse of social media during the election campaign ahead of the polls scheduled for March 5.

Issuing a statement, the party said attempts are being made to spread confusion about its leadership, policies and election symbol by misusing technology and involving artists. The UML demanded that anyone found engaged in such activities be brought under the ambit of the law.

The party also strongly objected to what it described as targeted abuse, indecent language and uncivil expressions directed at party chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, urging that such actions be stopped immediately.

Raising concerns over the overall law and order situation, the UML claimed that an environment conducive to free, fearless and fair voting has not yet been ensured. The party said incidents involving absconding prisoners, illegal firearms, increasing cases of robbery in the capital and a recent killing in Parwanipur of Bara district have raised serious questions about public security.

UML publicity coordinator Min Bahadur Shahi said the party has demanded swift investigation into such incidents, action against those responsible and the adoption of strong security measures by the government.

The party further alleged continuous violations of the election code of conduct and called on the concerned authorities to increase monitoring of activities that could undermine national integrity, sovereignty and public security.

Warning of possible disorder, violence and legal violations, the UML said responsibility for any such situation would lie with the government and the concerned bodies if timely action is not taken.
