NEA to construct new Butwal–Lamahi transmission line

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is set to construct a new 400 kV Butwal–Lamahi electricity transmission line to strengthen power transmission across the country.

The 161-kilometre-long transmission line will facilitate the flow of electricity from eastern Nepal to the west and support the transmission of power generated by projects developed along the Gandaki Corridor.

The project will be implemented across several districts of Lumbini Province, including Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Palpa, Kapilvastu, Arghakhanchi, and Dang.

As part of the project, NEA has issued a public notice to initiate an environmental study through an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) in the areas affected by the transmission line. The Authority has invited local stakeholders to provide suggestions, feedback, and advice during the preparation of the environmental assessment report.

The 400 kV transmission line will have a right-of-way corridor of 46 metres, extending 23 metres on either side from the centreline. A total of 405 transmission towers will be installed along the route. In addition, a substation with a capacity of 400/220/132/33/11 kV will be constructed in Rihar, Ward No. 9 of Lamahi Municipality in Dang district.

According to the notice, the environmental study will assess the project’s potential impacts on the area’s physical environment, biodiversity, social structure, cultural heritage, and economic systems. NEA has requested concerned individuals and institutions to submit relevant information, opinions, and recommendations regarding possible project impacts.
