KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has said it is seeking to make its 15th General Convention a “policy-selection” convention rather than limiting it to the selection of party leaders.
Speaking at a press conference held at Tundikhel, the venue for the convention’s opening ceremony, party spokesperson Devraj Chalise said efforts were underway to make the convention focus on policy as well as leadership selection.
He said the approach would help strengthen and institutionalise the party.
Chalise said the convention’s supreme body would discuss and decide on proposals to amend the party statute before the registration of candidacies. The general convention would have the final authority to add, remove or amend positions based on the proposal prepared by the statute amendment committee and discussed by the Central Working Committee.
He said candidacy registration would be held from 2 pm to 6 pm on Monday, October 5. The statute amendment would be completed before the nomination process, he added.
According to Chalise, the party leadership will be elected through a ballot-based election.
He said the closed session following Sunday’s inaugural session would present the party’s upcoming policies, programmes and contemporary reports.
The party president will also present a policy paper outlining the party’s positions for the next five years on political, economic, production, employment and foreign policy issues, Chalise said.
Delegates from across the country are continuing to arrive in Kathmandu for the convention. Registration has been arranged upon payment of a registration fee of Rs 3,500.
The Nepali Congress said preparations for the convention have been completed.
