Over 3,500 police personnel to be mobilised across Kathmandu during festive season

KATHMANDU: Over 3,500 police personnel will be mobilised across the capital during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath to strengthen security amid increased travel, large gatherings and other festival-related risks.

The Kathmandu District Police Range said the deployment is aimed at addressing heightened security risks during the festival season, when increased movement of people, large gatherings and homes being left unattended can create opportunities for criminal activities. Additional reserve teams from higher police offices will also be mobilised if required.

Police have identified religious sites such as Pashupatinath, Guhyeshwari and Dakshinkali as sensitive locations, along with crowded commercial areas including New Road, Asan, Koteshwar and Kalanki. Shopping malls, jewellery stores, government and private offices, and ATM booths have also been placed under heightened security surveillance.

Police have identified theft, pickpocketing, robbery, threats, gambling and the circulation of counterfeit currency as potential risks during the festive period. They are also preparing for incidents involving intoxicating substances being mixed into drinks, accidents caused by firecrackers, drink-driving and the sale of counterfeit tickets.

Security arrangements will also be strengthened around goat markets, which are expected to see increased crowds in the run-up to Dashain.

Police have begun identifying potential crime hotspots and other risks and are preparing preventive measures accordingly. Patrols, surveillance, security checks and police presence will be intensified in sensitive areas. Checkpoints, searches and special operations will also be conducted, with legal action to be taken against those involved in prohibited activities.

The security plan also includes greater use of technology, including CCTV cameras and drones. Trained dogs from the police canine unit will be deployed for security screening and other checks.

As part of the festival arrangements, passenger assistance desks will be established at Kalanki, Koteshwar, Gaushala, Gongabu Bus Park, Balkhu, Nagdhunga, Balaju Bypass, Sitapaila and Jorpati, among other locations, to assist travellers and address transport-related concerns.
