KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all three tiers of government to make rescue, relief, treatment and rehabilitation efforts more effective in areas affected by the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NHRC Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel stressed that post-disaster rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts should be carried out in a human rights-friendly manner.
Dr. Pokhrel said the Commission had deployed monitoring teams to Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan to conduct initial monitoring of rescue operations, treatment of the injured and the human rights situation of people being kept at holding centres.
The Commission expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods and sympathies to those grieving, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
The NHRC also thanked security personnel, health workers, civil servants, psychosocial counsellors, national and international organisations, and members of the general public involved in humanitarian assistance and rescue efforts.
The Commission urged all three tiers of government to work in coordination and collaboration with the private sector in rescue, relief, treatment and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected areas.
It also called on the public to support government efforts related to rescue, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction, and to actively participate in humanitarian assistance. The Commission urged people not to make negative comments on social media about the suffering of affected families during the difficult circumstances caused by the disaster.
The NHRC further appealed to the public to refrain from spreading rumours and unverified information.
