MAHENDRANAGAR: Seven municipalities in Kanchanpur district have declared a public holiday to mark the Gaura festival, a major cultural celebration in Nepal’s far-western region.
The municipalities declaring the holiday are Bhimdatta, Dodhara Chandani, Shuklaphanta, Punarbas, Laljhandi, Beldandi and another local unit in the district.
Mahesh Bahadur Bam, Chief Administrative Officer of Bhimdatta Municipality, confirmed that local authorities decided to grant the holiday to honor the cultural significance of the festival.
Meanwhile, Raksirang and Kailash rural municipalities have announced a two-day local public holiday on September 8 and 9 for the Nwagi (Chonam) festival celebrated by the Chepang community.
Government offices, public institutions and educational institutions in the two local units will remain closed during the holiday.
The Chepang community observes various rituals during the festival, including Rakhi Puja and offerings to ancestors. The celebrations are closely associated with the consumption of new crops and the worship of land and nature.
