KATHMANDU: Former Mongolian Prime Minister and President of the Mongolian Chess Federation, Gombozhabin Zandanshatar, paid a courtesy call on Education, Science and Technology and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel today.
During the meeting held at the ministry in Singha Durbar, the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, promote areas of common interest, and expand multidimensional cooperation between Nepal and Mongolia.
They also exchanged views on the geographical and cultural similarities between the two countries and their long-standing friendly diplomatic ties. Special emphasis was placed on the promotion of chess in school education and possible future cooperation in the field of sports.
On the occasion, Minister Pokharel highlighted the historic friendship between Nepal and Mongolia, their similar geographical characteristics, and their rich cultural diversity. He expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would deepen further in the coming days.
He said Nepal is interested in collaborating with the Mongolian government and the Mongolian Chess Federation, particularly in the areas of education and sports.
Minister Pokharel added that Nepal is moving toward integrating sports into school education and that the ministry is positive about this direction. He also expressed readiness to take initiatives to enhance cooperation between the Chess Federation of Nepal and the Mongolian Chess Federation.
Former Prime Minister Zandanshatar, while discussing diplomatic ties and cultural similarities between the two countries, noted that Mongolia is also a landlocked nation with a predominantly Buddhist population.
He emphasized that chess is not only a game but also an important educational tool. He said Mongolia has long been working with countries in South Asia and other parts of the world to integrate chess into school education.
He also expressed Mongolia’s willingness to cooperate with Nepal’s Ministry of Education and Sports in this effort.
