Special Court sentences Madhesh Province lawmaker Saroj Kumar Singh to over 4 years in prison in corruption case

KATHMANDU: The Special Court has sentenced Madhesh Province Assembly member Saroj Kumar Singh to four years and one month in prison after finding him guilty of taking bribes and commissions.

A division bench comprising Special Court Chairperson Sudarshan Dev Bhatt and members Umesh Koirala and Vidur Koirala had earlier convicted Singh under the Corruption Prevention Act, 2002.

Issuing the sentencing order, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 3.85 million, which has been determined as the amount of bribery and commission received from various consumer committees.

The court further ordered the confiscation of the same amount.

As Singh was an elected member of the Madhesh Province Assembly from Mahottari Constituency No. 4 (B) at the time of the offense, an additional one-month jail sentence was imposed under Section 24 of the Corruption Prevention Act.

According to the court, he has also been ordered to pay a compensation fee of Rs 154,005.56, which will be deposited into the victim relief fund.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a corruption case against Singh, alleging that he received commissions from different consumer committees. The Special Court upheld the commission’s claims and found him guilty.
