RSP tightens candidate selection rules ahead of local polls

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has made it mandatory for aspiring candidates in the upcoming local elections to pass through the Candidate Club and Leadership Academy before filing nominations.

Under the new provision, party members seeking tickets for positions such as ward chair, municipal chair, vice-chair, and mayor/deputy mayor must complete and pass the structured training process, which includes study and evaluation through these two platforms.

The decision was taken by the party’s central secretariat meeting held on Sunday, according to spokesperson Manish Jha.

The RSP, which has begun preparations for the upcoming local elections, has also moved forward with plans to align local and provincial assembly election strategies.

Earlier, a parliamentary party meeting had formed a local election candidate selection framework and established a Candidate Club drafting committee. Joint General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya has been appointed coordinator of the committee, while central member Ram Kumar (RK) Dhungana has been named secretary. The committee also includes five other members, including federal lawmakers.

Meanwhile, the party has initiated the Candidate Club exercise as part of its internal selection process and pre-election training programme.

As part of the internal guidelines, the party has also directed members not to engage in informal discussions or commitments regarding election tickets. It has warned that disciplinary action will be taken if violations are found.
