Press freedom a cornerstone of democracy: President

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has said a free and independent press is fundamental to democracy, urging the media to uphold truth, credibility and constitutional values.

Extending his best wishes on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2026), the President called on the Nepali media community to fully exercise and protect its constitutionally guaranteed rights while delivering accurate and reliable information to the public. He also conveyed his greetings to journalists and Nepali citizens at home and abroad.

Emphasizing the importance of independent journalism, President Poudel said the media must play a leading role in uncovering the truth and presenting facts, with a strong focus on accuracy and credibility in society.

Highlighting that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, he underscored the critical role of the media in democratic movements and governance. A free, impartial and independent press, he said, is essential for ensuring citizens’ right to information and strengthening democratic institutions.

The President also stressed the need to guarantee a safe and enabling working environment for journalists. He noted that the constitution ensures full freedom of press and expression, and that media professionals must be allowed to gather and disseminate information freely and without obstruction, representing all sections of society.

Referring to the growing influence of social media, he cautioned that the spread of false and misleading information could confuse the public and weaken democratic systems. He expressed confidence that World Press Freedom Day would encourage the media to tackle such challenges and continue providing truthful, factual and trustworthy information.
