WASHINGTON DC: The Artemis II mission has successfully carried out a crucial engine burn, pushing the Orion spacecraft out of Earth’s orbit and setting it on course for the far side of the Moon.
The translunar injection maneuver began at 19:49 EDT (23:49 GMT) and lasted just under six minutes, taking place at the spacecraft’s lowest orbital point relative to Earth.
According to NASA, the astronauts aboard the mission are in good condition on their second day in flight, and the spacecraft is operating smoothly.
NASA chief Jared Isaacman said the crew is “doing great,” with members also expressing comfort inside the Orion capsule after initially reporting cold conditions.
The Artemis II mission is designed as a crewed test flight, and while it will travel around the Moon, it will not attempt a lunar landing.
