NC seeks parliamentary probe into court-middlemen nexus

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party has decided to demand the formation of a high-level parliamentary committee to investigate alleged collusion between court officials and middlemen.

The meeting also decided to urge the government to immediately convene sessions of both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly to address the issue, said Chief Whip Basana Thapa.

A meeting of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party held at Singha Durbar on Monday called for a special parliamentary committee to conduct an independent, impartial and transparent investigation into the government’s controversial actions and take legal action against those found guilty.

The meeting stressed that governance must be carried out in accordance with the mandate received through elections and that neither the government nor any other institution can stand above the Constitution and the law, said Bhishma Raj Angdembe, leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party.

According to Angdembe, recent government activities have raised serious concerns over civil liberties, press freedom, the independence of constitutional bodies and the rule of law.

He described the deployment of police to newsrooms to arrest journalists without a clear legal basis, arrest warrant or court authorization as an attempt to exert undue pressure on independent journalism and an arbitrary violation of the rule of law.

Angdembe also stressed the need to safeguard judicial independence, ensure that government actions comply with established legal procedures and prevent any controversy surrounding the administration of justice.

He said further discussions would take place at a meeting of opposition parties to address the issues through Parliament. The parties would also discuss the formation of a high-level parliamentary investigation committee and determine the necessary course of action, he added.
